Jim Ware is a workplace futurist and meeting design strategist who works with committed change leaders to create strategic conversations that engage staff and produce meaningful results.

He is a former Harvard Business School professor who has invested his entire career enabling clients to invent and control their own futures by exploring and interpreting the changing nature of work, the workforce, and the workplace. He facilitates conversations and collaborative learning, builds scenarios of alternative futures, and transforms ideas and insights into bottom-line results.

In true 21st-century fashion, Jim wore several hats before retiring from active management in 2020. He was the founder and Executive Director of The Future of Work…unlimited, Global Research Director for Occupiers Journal Ltd., and a Partner with The FutureWork Forum. He was also a co-founder of the Great Work Cultures movement.

His latest book, Making Meetings Matter: New Rules and Cool Tools for Corporate Conversations in the Digital Age, was published by Indie Books International in February, 2016.

Jim has held senior management positions at several leading-edge professional services firms, including KPMG (now Bearing Point), Computer Sciences Corporation, Unisys Corporation’s Information Services Group, and The Concours Group (now nGenera).

The Future of Work…unlimited was a research and advisory services firm that created visions of the future and helped clients achieve them. Occupiers Journal Ltd. was a global peer and knowledge-exchange network providing proprietary research and advice to end-user real estate and facilities management executives. The FutureWork Forum is a global think tank of more than 20 independent consultants devoted to reviewing, researching, reporting and responding to issues around the future of work. The Great Work Cultures movement is a “Big Tent” bringing together a wide variety of organizations and individual champions who share a commitment to move our dominant management paradigm beyond Command and Control towards Respect and Empower.

A recognized expert in fostering collaborative inquiry that produces both learning and action, Jim led over two dozen sponsored research projects on topics such as managing remote workers, the future of business collaboration, developing workplace strategies, executive leadership and staff development, building business performance scorecards, and measuring workplace effectiveness.

Jim was a co-author and the lead editor for Cut It Out! Save for Today, Build for Tomorrow, published by the IFMA Foundation in 2009. He also wrote the chapter on change management for Work on the Move: Driving Strategy and Change in Workplaces, also from the IFMA Foundation (October 2011).

Corporate Agility (2007), co-authored with Charles Grantham and Cory Williamson, addresses the need for organizations to coordinate and integrate HR, IT, and CRE/facilities management to develop new business capabilities for competing in a flat, global economy. Corporate Agility was named one of the ten best business books of 2007.

Jim holds Ph.D., M.A., and B.Sc. degrees from Cornell University and an MBA (With Distinction) from the Harvard Business School. From 2012 to 2014 he served as the elected president of the Corporate Real Estate Council within IFMA, the International Facilities Management Association. He is a past president of the Northern California chapter of the National Speakers Association. Jim lives and works in Walnut Creek, California.

Currently Jim’s sole professional focus is serving as Managing Editor of Work&Place, a global management journal he co-founded in 2012.
